What is the digital Irish1Card in Apple Wallet?

Digital Irish1Card in Apple Wallet is an effort from the Irish1Card office where your iPhone and Apple Watch can do all the things your Irish1Card can. Anywhere you can swipe a card, you will be able to use your iPhone or Apple Watch.

What do I need to get started?
  1. iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus or later running the latest version of iOS
  2. Apple Watch Series 1 or later running the latest version of watchOS
  3. Apple ID signed into iCloud
  4. Get Mobile App
  5. Okta Multi-Factor Authentication
How do I add my Irish1Card to my Apple Wallet?
  1. Ensure that you have an approved photo on file. If you are not sure if you have an approved photo, contact the Campus Card office at idcard@nd.edu.
  2. Download Get Mobile from the Apple App Store
  3. Search All Institutions for the University of Notre Dame and Select
  4. Follow the prompts to login via the Okta process
  5. From the main screen of the Get Mobile app, select Add to Wallet
  6. Follow the prompts and accept the terms of service
  7. Your new ID is ready to use and can be viewed in Apple Pay
  8. Repeat Steps 4-6 for your Apple Watch

How do I use my digital Irish1Card on my Apple Devices?

The digital Irish1Card is configured in Express Mode by default. In Express Mode, you can approach the reader with a dark screen on your iPhone or Apple Watch without needing to authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID. Express Mode enables an extremely fast, frictionless experience designed for campus use.

If you don’t want to use Express Mode, you can turn it off. Open Wallet, tap your Irish1Card and navigate to the Express Mode on/off button.

Can I view my NDID number from my digital Irish1Card?

Yes, when you open the Wallet app and select your Digital Irish1Card, click the ⓘ in the upper right corner. Look for the ID# Field, this is your NDID.

Can I view my meal plan and Domer Dollars balances on my digital Irish1Card?

Yes, when you open the Wallet app and select your digital Irish1Card, you can view your balances right on the ID.

Is my digital Irish1Card considered an official University ID?

Yes, you can present your digital Irish1Card anywhere you use your Irish1Card now including Transpo Bus rides or bookstore discounts.

Do I need to change my device location if I'm an International Student?

As of iOS 16.4, Region is no longer a necessary setting.
If your device is using an earlier OS you should update it to the latest or your Region must be set to United States. In Settings, select Language & Region, and change the Region to the United States.

How do I verify my Apple Watch device version?

The Series # for your Apple Watch can be found on the back of the Watch.
Note: Series 0 Apple Watch is not eligible for this program.

How do I verify and/or update my Apple Watch software version?

On how many devices can I use my digital Irish1Card in Apple Wallet?

You can use your student ID card on up to two devices (one iPhone and one Apple Watch) that are signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.

Do I have to turn in my physical Irish1Card when I activate my digital Irish1Card?

No, your current card will be deactivated when you enable the digital Irish1Card. It is recommended to keep it in a safe place, but it does not need to be turned in.

Can I reactivate my plastic card?

It is possible to reactivate your plastic Irish1Card.

If your plastic Irish1Card is expired, please bring the expired card to the Irish1Card Office to create a new one. Business hours are Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 5:00pm.

For cards that are not expired, contact the Irish1Card Office to reactivate your plastic Irish1Card. You do not need to visit the office, but you will want to coordinate removal from your device so no access is lost.

What happens if I lose my iPhone or Apple Watch? If I find it afterward?
  • You should use Find My iPhone to suspend or deactivate your Irish1Card in Apple Wallet. Instructions for Lost/Found Apple devices and Find My iPhone are located at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201472
  • During Irish1Card Office hours (Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 5:00pm) contact the Irish1Card office at (574) 631-7814 to notify us to deactivate the card in the Wallet for that device. 
    • You can reactivate a found device that was suspended via iCloud.com or contact the Irish1Card Office during Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 5:00pm if deactivated by the Irish1Card Office.
What happens if I get a new iPhone or Apple Watch?

You should first remove your pass from your old device in the Apple Wallet app. Once your old pass is removed, you can add your pass to the new device by using the Get Mobile App.

If I have two phones, which one should I put the Irish1Card on?

You can only load the Irish1Card onto one phone at a time. Choose the device most convenient to your day to day life. If you have an Apple watch you intend to utilize, choose the phone the watch is connected to.

Why can’t I double-tap the home button or side button when my iPhone is locked to see my Irish1Card balances in Apple Pay?

When using Express Mode (iPhone 6s or later), your Irish1Card will not be displayed with other cards in Apple Wallet for security reasons.

If I have a passcode on my phone, will I have to enter it every time I use my Irish1Card?

If you are using Express Mode, you do not have to do anything but tap your device. If you are not using Express Mode, you will have to authenticate each time you access your phone. This is a user security preference. Note: Express Mode is turned on by default.

Can I use the digital Irish1Card if my iPhone has a dead battery?

On iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and more recent Express Mode with power reserve is available for up to five hours after the device’s battery needs to be charged.

Can I use Irish1Card in Apple Wallet without cellular signal?

Irish1Card in Apple Wallet can be used even if your iPhone or Apple Watch does not have network connectivity, as the Irish1Card is stored on your device. If you are having any difficulty using your Irish1Card to complete a transaction, report any issues to the Irish1Card Office at idcard@nd.edu or call (574) 631-7814 so we can investigate.

Does it cost anything?

There is no cost to use your Irish1Card in Apple Wallet.

Do I have to have a photo?

Yes, an approved photo is required for eligibility.

Is this just for students?

Faculty, staff, and students are eligible if they meet all device and software requirements. Affiliates, emeritus, spouses, and retirees are not eligible for a digital Irish1Card.

I have my iPhone and Apple Watch set up. What if I lose one of them?

Your other device will continue to work; however, you should mark the missing device as lost on icloud.com until it is found.

How do I use Irish1Card or Domer Dollars on my account from my phone?

The same way you have always used your plastic card - simply tap the reader with your phone instead of your card.

Will it work with off-campus merchants?

Yes, you can use your digital Irish1Card in Apple Wallet at off-campus merchants where your Irish1Card and Domer Dollars are accepted.
